Adventurous Routes: My Journey as a Traveling Surveyor
Traveling as a surveyor is not just a job; it’s an adventure that takes you to some of the most breathtaking locations on Earth. From the rugged mountains of the Drakensburg to the serene beaches of the Caribbean, every project offers a new experience and a chance to learn something unique. In this blog post, I will share my journey as a traveling surveyor, the challenges I faced, the skills I developed, and the incredible places I’ve visited along the way.

The Call of the Wild
When I first decided to become a surveyor, I was drawn to the idea of working outdoors, away from the confines of a traditional office. The thought of exploring new terrains and contributing to projects that shape communities excited me. I quickly learned that surveying is not just about measuring land; it’s about understanding the environment and how to work with it.
What is Surveying?
Surveying is the science of measuring distances, angles, and elevations to determine the relative position of points on the Earth's surface. It plays a crucial role in construction, land development, and environmental management. As a surveyor, I use various tools and technologies, including GPS, total stations, and drones, to gather data that informs planning and design.
The Journey Begins
My surveying journey started many years ago, with various holiday jobs with surveying firms in the Durban area, which took me to various corners of Southern Africa. A lot of that time spent in and around Maputo, in Mozambique. When I graduated from university, at the end of 1999, I started working full-time.
Fast-forward a few years and numerous interesting and varied projects, in May 2006 I started my own land surveying company, BBT Geomatics, based in Pietermaritzburg. Through this business I've had the immense privilege of working with some interesting and diverse characters, and exploring new horizons and secluded corners. The projects have been varied, from cadastral work where property boundaries and land rights intersect through to engineering and construction work.
Skills Developed on the Job
Technical Proficiency: I became proficient in using advanced surveying equipment. Understanding how to operate and maintain these tools is essential for accurate data collection.
Problem-Solving: Each project presents unique challenges. Whether it’s navigating difficult terrain, understanding and advising on complex property boundary scenarios or getting to grips with involved engineering or construction projects. I have learned to think on my feet and find solutions.
Communication: Working with engineers, architects, conveyancers, construction teams, and local authorities taught me the importance of clear communication. Being able to convey complex information in an understandable way is vital for successful collaboration.
The Beauty of Diversity
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a land surveyor is the opportunity to work in diverse environments. Each location offers its own set of challenges and rewards.
Coastal Projects
Working on coastal projects has been particularly fascinating. I am involved in a project to construct a new pier in the Caribbean. The combination of land and water surveying required a different skill set, including understanding tidal influences and marine navigation. The sunsets over the water were a bonus!
Urban Surveying
Urban environments present their own challenges. I have worked on multiple projects in large cities where I had to navigate busy streets and work around existing structures. The experience taught me the importance of precision and planning in densely populated areas.
Overcoming Challenges
Traveling for work can be rewarding, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. From long hours to unpredictable weather, I’ve learned to adapt and stay resilient.
Time Management
Traveling often means juggling multiple projects in different locations. I learned to prioritize tasks and manage my time effectively to meet deadlines without compromising quality.
The Impact of Technology
Technology has transformed the field of surveying. From the adoption of GPS a few years ago through to the use of drones and 3D terrestrial scanners, technology is contiually advancing and it's important to try to stay abreat of these moves and find ways that meaningfully serve the projects at-hand.
The Future of Surveying
As technology continues to evolve, so does the role of surveyors. I believe that embracing new tools and techniques will be essential for future projects. Staying updated with industry trends ensures that I remain competitive and effective in my work.
The Personal Touch
While the technical aspects of surveying are crucial, the personal connections I’ve made along the way have been equally important. Collaborating with local communities and understanding their needs has enriched my experience.
Building Relationships
Working closely with local stakeholders has taught me the value of building relationships. Whether it’s discussing project plans with residents or collaborating with local governments, these connections foster trust and cooperation.
Lessons Learned
Throughout my journey as a surveyor, I’ve learned valuable lessons that extend beyond technical skills. Here are some key takeaways:
Embrace Change: Every project is different, and being adaptable is essential for success.
Stay Curious: The world is full of opportunities to learn. Embrace new experiences and seek knowledge wherever you go.
Value Teamwork: Collaboration is key. Working with others not only enhances the quality of work but also makes the journey more enjoyable.
Conclusion
Being a travelling surveyor has been an incredible adventure filled with challenges, learning opportunities, and breathtaking landscapes. Each project has shaped my skills and broadened my horizons. As I continue on this journey, I look forward to exploring new territories and contributing to meaningful projects that make a difference in the world.
If you’re considering a career in surveying or simply want to learn more about this fascinating field, I encourage you to embrace the adventure. The world is waiting for you to explore!
